Overview

To contextualize your school's budget results, EdOps provides anonymous sector comps for large categories of revenue and expense (See example above).  This chart includes a row for each major category. In each row, you will see your school as a thick black circle, the median as a '+' symbol, and comp schools as a red, yellow or green dot.  On the right side of the table, you will see your budget amount for the upcoming school year and your amount over, or under, the median.

In the example above, our anonymous school has $400k less in State and Local Revenue than our peers if they had our student population, but $1.6m more in Federal Revenue. In fact, we are a real outlier in Federal Revenue.

Calculating DC Comps

All of the other dots should be read as "this is the amount my competitors would earn/spend if they had my student population." We calculate each dot by dividing a competitor's earnings or spending amount by their weighted average student population and multiplying it by your school's weighted average student population. We drive the weighted average calculation off the Per-Pupil Funding formula. This process allows direct comparability of varied schools by removing the artifacts created by different grade level, SpEd, ELL, or residential populations.

Calculating Missouri Comps

All of the other dots should be read as "this is the amount my competitors would earn/spend if they had my student population." We calculate each dot by dividing a competitor's earnings or spending amount by their weighted average student population and multiplying it by your school's weighted average student population. We drive the weighted average calculation off the WADA formula. This process allows direct comparability of varied schools by removing the artifacts created by different grade level, SpEd, ELL, or residential populations.
